Helpful Resources
In this day and age, there is so much great (and not so great) content out there that it can feel quite overwhelming and confusing as to where to even start.
Here is a list of some of my favourites to help narrow things down. This is by no means an exhaustive list but hopefully a less overwhelming place for you to start.
Hope you enjoy some of these incredible voices and minds of our time!
Books
Power of Vulnerability | Brené Brown
First off, Brené Brown is an incredible storyteller! This audiobook is a collection of teachings where she dispels the myth that vulnerability is weakness and rather, is the most accurate measure of courage which opens us to experiences that bring purpose and meaning to our lives.
Nonviolent Communication | Marshall Rosenberg
This one’s an oldie but a goodie. If you’d like to be a better communicator in all aspects of life, this one’s for you. It teaches how to communicate from a place of empathy, compassion, collaboration, and authenticity and have more satisfying relationships (with others and yourself).
Hold Me Tight | Dr. Sue Johnson
This is a classic in the realm of romantic relationships. If you don’t know where to begin, this book is a solid start. I’ve found it especially helpful for folks who are coming out of relationships and trying to make sense of what happened.
Wired for Dating | Stan Tatkin
On the basis of neuroscience, attachment theory, and emotional regulation, this book helps you understand your and your partner’s brain as you navigate dating and establish what Stan Tatkin calls a “secure functioning” relationship.
The Road Less Travelled | M. Scott Peck
This is another classic. Bit of a tougher read because every word carries weight and meaning. Both an intellectual and spiritual take on the nature of loving relationships and the art of living.
Podcasts
Where Should We Begin? with Esther Perel
This award-winning podcast with a famous and respected psychotherapist Esther Perel invites the listener behind closed doors of her therapy room where we get to listen in as Esther sits down with real people and offers insight on a wide range of challenges of being and relating in the complex world of today. This is a place where we often hear our own stories reflected in the lives of others.
Jillian on Love, with Jillian Turecki
This is a good one if you’ve been through some tough relational stuff! “Whether you’re looking to strengthen the relationship you’re in, heal your heartbreak and choose better partners, develop a stronger sense of self, or move away from dysfunctional patterns into highly functioning ones this show is for you.” At the core, Jillian’s message is if you want to transform your love life, it begins by addressing the relationship you have with yourself.
Being Well, with Forrest Hanson and Dr. Rick Hanson
This father and son duo are joined by “world-class group of experts to explore the practical science of lasting well-being. Conversations focus on the key insights from psychology, science, and contemplative practice that you need to build reliable inner strengths, overcome your challenges, and get the most out of life.”
